The day
From the door to pickup
The order stays the same each day, and the time inside each part is long. Teachers play alongside and follow what children are into.
- 8:00 a.m.
Step 1: Arrival
A teacher greets each child at the door. Children hang up their things, wash their hands and choose where to start.
- 8:30 a.m.
Step 2: Play and projects
The longest part of the day. Blocks, dress-up, the play kitchen, paint, clay and the sand table are all out, and a project can carry on for days.
- 10:00 a.m.
Step 3: Snack
Children serve themselves fruit and crackers at a low table and talk while they eat. Teachers sit with them.
- 10:30 a.m.
Step 4: The yard
Trikes, the sandbox, the playhouse and the mud kitchen under the pecan trees. In summer, the yard is a morning thing and in the shade.
- 11:30 a.m.
Step 5: Story and songs
A short group time on the rug with a book, a song or a puppet. Children who need to move can sit at the edge.
- 12:30 p.m.
Step 6: Pickup, or lunch and rest
Half-day children go home at 12:30 p.m. The school day carries on with lunch from home, rest or quiet time, afternoon play and pickup at 3:30 p.m.
Watch a morning
Tours run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the rooms are in the middle of their day.
